Cleaning up the Hogsmill and River Mole
The disgusting levels of raw sewage being dumped in the River Mole and the Hogsmill are simply unacceptable. In 2024 alone, Thames Water pumped almost 300,000 of raw sewage into its waterways, all whilst raising your bills, failing to invest in our water infrastructure and racking up a £19 billion mountain of debt.
At every turn, I've been calling for the Government to get to grips with the raw sewage crisis. After 14 years of the Conservatives allowing water companies like Thames Water to get away with it, I and my Liberal Democrat colleagues will not allow the Labour Government to stand idle.
I've been calling on the Government to place Thames Water under special administration and turn them into a Public Benefit Company - which would mean that instead of profits going into the pockets of stakeholders, these profits would go back into improving our services and bringing your bills down.
I've also called for the water regulator, Ofwat, to be scrapped and replaced with a Clean Water Authority with real teeth to crackdown on water companies who fail to meet their environmental obligations.
In meetings with Ministers and Thames Water, in Parliamentary questions and in written questions, I have repeatedly stood on the side of my constituents, who should not have to pay the price for failing water companies.
