Helen at Disability Cuts meeting in Ashtead

Helen on Disability Cuts (Personal Independence Payments & Carer's Allowance)

Personal Independence Payments (PIP) are a lifeline for many people living with a disability, including those with epilepsy.

These payments not only offset the extra costs of disability, they also help a number of my constituents in Epsom & Ewell to work and live more independently, and I made this point to the Secretary of State for Work & Pensions, Liz Kendall.

The Government's recent u-turn on welfare cuts is policy making on the hoof, and it is confusing and devastating for disabled people and we still have no clear plan, no impact assessments and no answers.

Now it seems there will be a terrifying two-tier system between today’s disabled people and tomorrow’s, leaving some of my most vulnerable constituents in Epsom & Ewell at risk of no longer receiving the support they need in future.

Whilst I acknowledge that the amount spent on welfare is too high, we must also address the root causes of the rising welfare bill, including chronic ill-health, young people’s mental ill-health and the crisis in the NHS and social care.

We need meaningful benefits reform, not cruel cuts from a Labour Government lurching from crisis to crisis.

I and my Liberal Democrat colleagues will keep standing up for disabled people, carers, and all those left behind by a broken system in Epsom & Ewell and beyond.

I stand against senseless cuts to sick and disabled people, now and in the future.
