Responding to Ofwat’s announcement, Surrey’s Liberal Democrat MPs have issued the following statement:

"We welcome Ofwat's decision to implement new powers to require water companies to ban performance related executive bonuses, including pollution and financial mismanagement. This announcement is long overdue.

"This decision is further proof that failing Thames Water is not fit for purpose. We hope Ofwat will now take the necessary steps to take Thames Water to task over their unacceptable pollution of our waterways here in Surrey.

"From Chobham to Woking and Horley to Leatherhead, our constituents have endured repeated and devastating sewage floods from Thames Water’s treatment works, while executives take home bonuses and customers' bills skyrocket.

"With almost 300,000 hours of raw sewage being pumped into our waterways in 2024 alone, Thames Water has shown a complete disregard for our constituents. The Government needs to recognise that Thames Water cannot keep throwing good money after bad and get away with polluting our waterways.

"Thames Water must be placed into special administration immediately."
