Responding to the publication of the Government’s NHS Ten Year Plan, Liberal Democrat MPs Bobby Dean, Helen Maguire and Luke Taylor said:

“Nobody denies that it’s important to shift care from hospital to community but the chronic underinvestment in Epsom & St Helier leaves the very future of our hospitals themselves under threat.

“The Government has missed a massive opportunity to deliver real change for Epsom & St Helier Hospitals. There is a £150 million maintenance backlog at Epsom & St Helier, and all the Government has offered us in recent months is a £12 million drop in the ocean.

“Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals Trust are already taking really positive steps to bring healthcare to patients from home births to rehabilitation services. However, without the urgent repairs our hospitals so desperately need, patients at Epsom & St Helier will not be able to get the care they deserve when they do need to visit our hospitals

“The Government missed another opportunity to give Epsom and St Helier what they need today - they must move faster - and they must address the crisis in social care at the same time.”
