Epsom & Ewell MP shares “disappointment” at Government’s refusal to back their ‘Buy British’ campaign

Local Liberal Democrat MP, Helen Maguire, has expressed their “disappointment” at the Government’s rejection of their ‘Buy British’ campaign which encourages people in Epsom & Ewell to buy local products as a way of standing tall against Trump’s trade war and to back businesses in the community as they deal with the fall out.

The Chancellor criticised the campaign as “inward looking” and said that the Government would not be backing the campaign. Epsom & Ewell’s MP said in response that they would “always have our local businesses back” and vowed to continue the campaign.

Liberal Democrat MP for Epsom & Ewell, Helen Maguire, said:

“Businesses here in Epsom & Ewell will be feeling a real sense of disappointment that the Government has refused to back them in their time of need - especially small and independent businesses, who are already having to lay off staff just to stay afloat.

“Many of our local businesses have been hit from pillar to post by rising costs, Brexit, and the Chancellor’s jobs tax coming into force just days ago. Trump’s trade war is the last thing these businesses need and many business owners will understandably be very worried about the additional damage this may do.

“I know people in our community are ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with local businesses here in Epsom & Ewell in their hour of need and ‘Buy British’. We Liberal Democrats will always have our local businesses’ backs and join with them to stand up to Trump’s assault on the global economy.”
