New poll predicts huge gain for Liberal Democrats in Epsom & Ewell at the General Election
New poll predicts Epsom & Ewell voters are turning against Conservative MP Chris Grayling, with Liberal Democrats on course to slash his majority!
A new poll suggests Helen Maguire, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Epsom & Ewell, is on course to slash the Conservative Party’s majority at the next election.
The poll for The Times newspaper suggests if an election were held now, Liberal Democrat candidate Helen Maguire would hugely cut the majority held by Conservative MP Chris Grayling from the current 17,873 majority to a mere 3,515 majority.
The poll, conducted by Stonehaven, takes into account the predicted impact of tactical voting as voters swing behind the candidate most likely to beat the Conservatives. It also considers the boundary changes. At the next general election, Leatherhead will form part of the constituency and Epsom & Ewell will lose Tattenham and Norks.
It comes after Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey vowed to “tear down the Blue Wall” at the next election in his speech to his party’s Autumn Conference last week, following the party’s four emphatic by-election wins in formerly safe Conservative seats in the past two years.
The Liberal Democrats set out a range of key policies at their conference, including:
Giving people the right to see a GP within a week, or 24 hours if in urgent need
A legal guarantee to start cancer treatment within two months of an urgent referral
Ensuring people can get an NHS dentist appointment when they need one.
Responding to the poll, Helen Maguire, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Epsom & Ewell, said:
“These figures show the momentum is with the Liberal Democrats in our area, and that voters want a change.
“I am proud that we have set out a clear plan to tackle what really matters to people; health services, the cost-of-living crisis, and the impact that years of the Conservative Government’s neglect has had on people and communities.
“I am angry and frustrated to hear people tell me they are fed up with struggling to get a GP or dentist appointment, soaring prices in the shops, rents and mortgages spiralling, and our rivers being polluted by filthy sewage.
“It is now clearer than ever that only the Lib Dems can defeat the Conservative Party in Epsom & Ewell, and that a vote for Labour or the Greens will simply allow the Conservatives back. We can send a clear message to the Conservative Party in Epsom & Ewell, but every single vote will count.”
